Free vs paid AI directories: when paying is worth it

Of the 163 directories in our list, 39 are free, 64 are free with paid options (featured spots or fast-track review), 5 are paid only, and for 55 — mostly newer local-language sites — we haven't confirmed pricing yet.

What "freemium" usually means

The basic listing is free but goes into a review queue. Paying gets you faster review, a featured slot, a dofollow link or a newsletter mention. Prices change often, so always check the site itself.

When paying can make sense

• You have a fixed launch date and the free queue is longer than your window.
• The directory's audience matches your buyer closely (for example, an AI writing tool on a site that is popular with marketers).
• You can measure it: use a UTM link and compare signups, not pageviews.

When it doesn't

• Before your product is ready for strangers: onboarding, pricing page and a clear demo come first.
• "Guaranteed DR" or "guaranteed traffic" bundles. No one controls a third-party site's ranking.
• Directories you can't find any real users talking about.

A sane budget rule

Do all free and freemium-free submissions first. After 4–6 weeks, look at which free listings actually sent signups, and only then consider paying for a featured spot on those same sites.
